WHY THIS MATTERS

Bitcoin began with an intimacy we have almost forgotten. In Satoshi's 2009 release, one ordinary computer could run the rules and compete to produce the next block. By December, Satoshi was already warning that a GPU arms race would make entry harder. Pools made rewards steadier. ASICs made SHA-256d mining an industrial business. Each step was rational. Together they separated the people who can say no to a block from the people equipped to make the next one.

BIP-110 put that separation on-chain. On August 8, Roughnecks, through OCEAN, mined block 961,632, the first block required to signal bit 4. Six minutes later, F2Pool mined a different block 961,633 without the signal; RDTS nodes rejected it. Roughnecks then found the BIP-110-valid 961,633, but nearly all existing SHA-256d work extended the other history. The software did exactly what its operators asked: it refused. It could not summon the next block. Roughnecks paused, then returned on August 12 and extended the accepted RDTS history.

The strongest answer from the other side is fair: BIP-110 did not have enough support. It remained a tiny minority branch. But that describes the result; it does not close the governance question. What if the enforcing minority had been 5%, 10%, or 30%? A node chooses the rules it accepts, but validation alone cannot command work, liquidity, or recognition. That is not the same as saying nodes do not matter. It is more exact, and more troubling: sovereignty over acceptance is not sovereignty over production.

We have no evidence that four or five pool executives met on Teams or Zoom with Michael Saylor, and this site will not present that image as fact. No meeting is required for the structural risk to exist. When competitive SHA-256d production passes through a small set of coordinators responding to aligned incentives, a practical veto can emerge without a conspiracy. Institutions can hold the production power while still borrowing legitimacy from the node runners, volunteers, and decentralization culture that make Bitcoin worth defending.

Bitcoin's rules live in code, but its restraint also lives in culture. In the 2017 UASF story, node-runner pressure and miner coordination ultimately overlapped. Here they did not. The proof-of-work question now in front of the community is concrete: can the people who run Bitcoin's rules once again have a competitive way to help produce its work? BIP-110 did not settle that question. It made the separation impossible to unsee. What a pleasure to know.
